It was Jon's idea to have a window in the stairway, which is just what we need for light and ventilation. We decided to add a pot shelf for access to the window and as a way to decorate the stairway. Fannie, our Amish friend from Ethridge, TN made the basket for us. The boy and girl figurines are gifts from Helen, my sister, and Winnie, my cousin. We have named them, Jon and Carolyn. The decorative iron plaque of an eagle, is a gift from Kathy, Jon's sister, and her daughter, Jade. The gifts are perfect for the stairway.
Jon chose the design and color of this bathroom sink cabinet. We have a picture from an old country magazine of the original, which is in the Shaker Museum in New Lebanon, NY. The color of the cabinet and the blue in the antique wash bowl that my Grandmother gave me, while I was in high school, made choosing colors for the room easy. The washboard cabinet is perfect for hanging hand towels, and the jelly cabinet is perfect for toiletries. Jon refers to the bench as the B.A.W. Bench, Big Ass Woman Bench. He built it with the leftover part of the beam from the head of the stairway.
Jon built the red oak dry sink several years ago and we put it into storage. It was built especially for my Grandmother's wash bowl. The red oak slide out cabinet is patterned like one in Jon's woodworking magazine. It gives a little privacy for the toilet, while serving as a storage area as well. It was Jon's clever idea to hang the old door at the end of the shower for access to the plumbing.
When Bruce and Lynda Taylor sold their Florida home, they had more furniture than they could use in their North Carolina home. They gave us the bed, complete with bedding, the trunk, and several other items. The dresser was given to us many years ago by one of Jon's art students. We have been blessed by our friends. The blue chairs had been dropped off with our Amish friends for caneing, but never picked up, so one year later we bought them for the cost of the caneing job.
