The left photo is of the sitting area, which shows the 1854 Springfield Musket, that was converted from a flint lock to a cap lock during the Civil War. Jon's Dad got this gun as a young man as payment for doing some work for a neighbor. The right photo shows the black walnut corner cabinet Jon built to conceal our television. It is patterned after an 1860 Civil War period antique that belongs to a friend, who inherited it from her Grandmother. Jon built the 60 Caliber Smoothbore Trade Gun from a kit he won at a shooting competition, that he shot with a borrowed gun.
Our Amish friends in Ethridge, TN have recaned nine antique, ladder back chairs and the Shaker nursing rocking chair, for us during the last few years. We usually visit them during August, while attending the David Crockett Days to sell our Indian Frybread.
We purchased the recliner and the swivel chair from Bruce and Lynda Taylor. Jon refurbished the leaded glass door cabinet, which was given to us by Evie, the little old lady we bought our Florida home from. She received it from her Grandmother as a wedding gift. It was at one time built into a wall at her Grandmother's home. Evie is now 94 years old.
The red oak, walnut trestle table Jon built in Florida, with freight car dunnage from Jacksonville. I bought the oak, antique secretary for my Mother in 1964, from an antique shop near our home. She paid me back in installments and said it would be mine after she died. My Father's second wife, Leola, convienced my Dad to honor my Mother's wishes to give it to me. My Mother had used it as a china cabinet, so Jon and I decided to use it the same way. The secretary had sat in a southern home on the same wall for 100 years before the antique shop purchased it.
The black walnut sideboard Jon built to look like an antique. He used the antique, beveled mirror I bought at an antique shop's yard sale for all of $2.50. The Bob Cratchett desk has been on display at the Whistle Stop Antique Mall, since Jon built it December 1999. The shop owner hated to see it go. We have our telephone concealed in the roll top section.
