March 1, 2002 Jon called the building department and ask to have someone come do a walk through to let him know what else would be needed to meet code. He asked that they come in the afternoon and to call before coming. Jon decided to run into town in the morning so he would be home for the inspector. I went into the basement to get a jar of my canned vegetable soup and much to my surprise I heard someone walking around on the main floor. When I saw the truck, I knew it was the inspector. My heart sank. I certainly didn't want to do the walk through without Jon. I did the best I could and he left me with a pink card with a list of four things that needed to be done.
1. The girders were too small for the deck. Jon called the inspector several times trying to find out how to solve the problem. The original instructions caused a problem. Then Jon was instructed to add footers and post in the center of the porch floor for supports. Another inspector told Jon that wasn't necessary, but we have to do it to get our final inspection. After the final inspection, the post will be removed.
2. Another 2X10 header had to be added on the porch roof. Jon was creative in doing that and it looks good.
3. The load bearing wall that was required in the basement below the bathroom will serve a purpose of dividing the space.
4. We had to replace the window near the front door and the window over the bathtub on the main floor with tempered glass.
One thing we have learned about inspectors is that they don't all agree. Since we can't request who we want to inspect, we just have to do what we are told by the inspector that shows up. There is one inspector referred as Storming Norman. He is known through out the county as someone that can spoil a good day.
